Anyone familiar with the works of Lesslie Newbigin, especially his famous book on mission titled "The Gospel in a Pluralist Society" would do well to read this book. Tomlin does an excellent job of describing in a practical manner what Newbigin's missional church would actually look like in the real world and how such a church has an impact on the world around it as a sign of the kingdom of God.Product details

In this book Grant Tomlin’s describes why he thinks people join churches and stay. His basic answer is that some churches seem to make a difference in people’s lives. Tomlin points out what deliberately, if often indirectly, will attract even those not originally interested or connected to Christianity, namely transforming churches into disciple-forming bodies that practice what Christianity preaches, as much if not more by deeds than by words.
One premise of the book is that most people are dissatisfied with the way things are and would be open to a change, even if their dissatisfaction is somewhat hidden or distracted by busyness. Lives of their friends or acquaintances which reveal some ongoing change in the direction of selflessness, compassion, justice and joy do not however go unnoticed and attract. How to effect such a change in church-goers and churches to make them thus provocative, even for the religiously-estranged or disinterested, is what Tomlin describes in the book.
Many Christians may feel guilty about not being ‘evangelical.’ Tomlin reassures them that the vocally pro-active in evangelizing are not necessarily the most effective or even the key evangelizers. It’s not primarily a campaign that attracts or provokes inquiry. It is relationships and the goodness of Christians’ lives that generate desires to inquire about the cause of such living.
Tomlin asserts that new relationships matter, relationships with God in adoration, with others in belonging to a community, with creation in compassion, with self in becoming a disciple and with words inviting others to life under God’s rule. In addition to living full, if imperfect Christian lives, Tomlin is convinced that gathering in small groups where people can share their own simple faith stories is one of the most natural and effective ways to evangelize, a method available to any Christian, no matter what background or verbal skills.
While there is nothing essentially new in what Tomlin points out this little book provides a useful reminder in a contemporary context for members of Christian churches to reflect on a core principle of evangelizing .Christianity, namely that we preach best by our lives.
If you are serious about Jesus, if you are serious about your life, if you want to grow, read it! Highly recommended.
Tomlin's book is a different twist partly because it comes from the other side of the pond. But that is not really a big twist. Rather the twist comes in some of his chapters on the role and the function of the church. This is very telling of the modern church mind-set and approach. Though he is not incorrect (IMO) there are several concepts I don't agree with. This book is less of a do's and dont's and more of a "reason behind why." I would recommend this short read for any pastor or evangelistic study because there is a very good window into the challenges of the modern church and evangelism for the 21st century.
